3D File Converter: Convert OBJ, 3MF, GLB to STL & More

Convert 3D files between STL, OBJ, 3MF, GLB, and GLTF formats in your browser. Whether you need a slicer-ready STL from an OBJ export, a printable mesh from a GLB asset, or an OBJ from an existing STL — STL Buddy handles common format conversions without installing software.

3D File Formats: When to Use Each

Choosing the right 3D file format depends on your workflow — 3D printing, rendering, web delivery, or CAD editing. Here is a quick overview of the formats STL Buddy converts.

STL — geometry-only, universal for 3D printing

STL (Stereolithography) stores 3D surface geometry as triangles — nothing more. No color, texture, or material metadata. That simplicity is why every slicer, download site, and 3D printer accepts STL as the default print format.

OBJ — supports textures and materials, popular in design software

OBJ (Wavefront Object) carries mesh geometry plus texture coordinates, vertex colors, and material groups in companion MTL files. It is widely used in Blender, Maya, and game pipelines — but FDM printers usually need an STL export before slicing.

GLB/GLTF — modern web standard, ideal for AR/VR and games

GLB is the binary packaging of glTF — the open standard for real-time 3D on the web. It bundles meshes, materials, and animations in one compact file, making it perfect for AR/VR previews, game engines, and online viewers. Convert GLB or GLTF to STL when you need a printable mesh.

3MF — color and material data, next-generation 3D printing format

3MF (3D Manufacturing Format) is a modern ZIP-based format that can store geometry, colors, multiple objects, and print settings in one file. Bambu Studio and PrusaSlicer export 3MF natively. Convert 3MF to STL for maximum slicer compatibility.

3D File Format Comparison Table

Compare geometry support, textures, colors, materials, file size, and software compatibility across STL, OBJ, GLB, and 3MF.

Feature STL OBJ GLB 3MF

Supported Conversion Paths

STL Buddy focuses on the most common format swaps makers and designers need every day.

OBJ to STL

Import Wavefront OBJ models from Blender, Maya, or scan data and export a slicer-ready STL mesh.

GLB to STL

Turn glTF/GLB assets from web apps, AR viewers, or game pipelines into printable STL geometry.

3MF to STL

Convert 3MF files from Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, or Windows 3D Builder into universal STL format.

STL to OBJ

Export STL meshes to OBJ when you need texture coordinates or plan to edit the model in design software.

3D Format Conversion Use Cases

From 3D printing prep to game engine imports — here is when format conversion saves time.

Preparing files for 3D printing (→ STL)

Download sites and collaborators often share OBJ, GLB, GLTF, or 3MF files. Converting to STL ensures your model opens in Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, Chitubox, or any other slicer without compatibility surprises.

Importing to a game engine (→ OBJ/GLB)

When you need to move a printable STL into Unity, Unreal, or a web viewer, convert STL to OBJ for editing pipelines — or use GLB for optimized real-time rendering and AR/VR deployment.

Fixing format mismatches from CAD exports

Design tools export different formats by default. A quick browser conversion saves time when your slicer only accepts STL or your renderer expects OBJ.

Sharing models with mixed toolchains

Teams using different software benefit from a neutral conversion step. Convert once in the browser, then pass the right format to each teammate's workflow.

Conversion Quality Considerations

Understand what survives a format conversion — and what to verify before printing or publishing.

Polygon count preservation

STL Buddy preserves the original triangle mesh during conversion. High-resolution scans and organic models stay detailed — but file size grows with polygon count. Decimate in Blender or Meshmixer if your slicer struggles with large STLs.

Texture handling

OBJ textures and GLB/GLTF materials do not transfer to STL because STL stores geometry only. Convert to OBJ or keep the original GLB when you need color data for rendering. For FDM printing, textures are ignored anyway.

Scale accuracy

STL files do not embed unit metadata. After converting OBJ, GLB, or 3MF to STL, verify scale in your slicer before printing. 3MF files may include unit headers — check dimensions after conversion.

Troubleshooting Format Conversions

Common issues when converting 3D files online — and how to resolve them.

Failed conversions

Corrupt or incomplete files often fail to parse. Re-export from the source application, ensure companion files (MTL for OBJ) are included, and try a desktop tool like Blender if the browser converter cannot read the mesh.

File size limits

The browser converter accepts files up to 50 MB. Very large scans may exceed this limit or load slowly on mobile devices. Use a desktop browser and simplify the mesh if needed.

Format compatibility issues

Some 3MF extensions and GLB/GLTF animations are not fully supported in lightweight converters. Geometry-only 3MF and static GLB meshes convert reliably. Animated or heavily textured assets may need Blender for full fidelity.
