Check Printability Before You Print

Use the STL viewer & editor as a first-pass QA step before slicing or sharing files with a print partner.

Watertight mesh

Spin the model and look for gaps, missing faces, or see-through patches. Non-watertight meshes often fail in slicers or produce weak prints.

Wall thickness

Zoom into thin walls, embossed text, and small features. Details below your printer's minimum wall thickness may not print reliably.

Build orientation

Preview how the model sits on the print bed. Steep overhangs and tall narrow parts are easier to spot in 3D than in a flat thumbnail.

Scale and units

Compare proportions against the ground grid. STL files do not store units — a millimeter vs inch mix-up is a common cause of wrong-sized prints.

Common STL Issues and How to Fix Them

Visual inspection in the STL viewer catches many failures before they reach the build plate.

Holes and open edges

Dark shading or see-through areas often indicate missing faces. Repair with your slicer's mesh tools or MeshLab's hole-filling filters, then re-upload to verify.

Inverted normals

Facets that look darker than surrounding surfaces may face inward. Fix normals in MeshLab or Blender, then preview the uniform surface here.

Floating or duplicate shells

Disconnected geometry can confuse slicers and waste filament. Merge shells in CAD or remove stray triangles before printing.

Excessive triangle count

Very dense meshes slow browsers and slicers. Decimate in MeshLab or Blender on desktop, then preview the lighter file here.

Privacy — Your Files Stay Local

When you upload an STL for preview, the file is read in your browser and rendered with WebGL on your device. STL Buddy does not persist those uploads on our servers for the online viewer. Optional demo geometry loads from a public URL; your own files stay in memory for the session unless you choose separate conversion tools that explicitly save output. Inspect locally, repair in your slicer, then verify on your terms.
