Lithophane Maker: Turn Photos into Glowing 3D Prints

A lithophane is a 3D printed photo that uses varying thickness of plastic to control light transmission. Thicker areas block light (appearing dark), while thinner areas let light through (appearing bright). The image is only clearly visible when backlit.

White PLA is the gold standard for lithophanes. It provides the best contrast and light diffusion. Colored or transparent filaments usually result in poor image quality.

High-contrast photos with simple backgrounds work best. Portraits, pets, and silhouettes are ideal. Avoid busy group shots or low-light images.

No! You should print lithophanes vertically (standing up) for the best resolution. If printed flat, you lose detail. Use a brim for bed adhesion, but supports generally arent needed.
